Creative Apps I've Tried and Can Recommend
Animation
LEGO Movie
does not require Legos to use, and is free. Very easy to learn. I recommend you try this first. |
Animation
iMotion HD
has a few more steps, and features, however for older kids only. I do not find it as intuitive as LEGO Movie. |
Animation
DoInk
Great App! Very robust, students can create fairly complicated 2D animations. See some here: https://goo.gl/YnWYtJ Wonderful problem solving opportunities. Totally worth paying for. |
Drawing
Doodle Buddy For Younger Students
|
Drawing
Color Box HD
I love the tools - hate the ads. |
Drawing
Paper by FiftyThree I purchased the free version, and I love the pen tool - I want the other tools, but they cost more. There are great reviews about the stylus which can be purchased.
|
Painting
Inspire Pro
I've loves some of the images that I have created, but I always need to relearn where to find the tools. Not very intuitive. |
Drawing/Painting
SketchBookX
for older students - I LOVE this program, because it has a huge amount of tools as well as layers. Bravo. |
Drawing/Painting
Procreate
is a lot of fun for older students. You can import images, rotate them, work with layers (and turn on and off those layers.) Too complicated for younger artists. Overall a very powerful app. |
Photography
PS Express
Photoshop Express - wonderful basic tools Very easy to use. |
Photography
Etchings
This is a helpful app when teaching about texture as well as how to create value with line. |
Photography
Binary Photo
This is a great app to add high contrast (removing all color) to a photo. Importing an image, removing the color then seeing it in pure black and white is very helpful. |
Photography
GrungetasticHD
Adding different effects to change the mood of an image is enlightening. |
Photography
Percolator
I really enjoy this app, though it is really easy to tell that art was created using it. The +: easy to change images and make choices. The -: Circles, always circles. I love it, though. |
Photography
Color Effects This app removes all the color from an image (it could be from an actual photograph, or a photograph of a painting/drawing) then color can be selectively added. Easy to use, and very educational.

Narrative Art
Tellagami
Import an image for a backdrop (such as a photo of art), customize a SIM character, then either record your voice or type what you want to say and the SIM will speak it for 30 seconds. You can save your "discussion about your art." What's not to like? See one I created here. |
Narrative Art
Comic Life
I love this easy to use Comic creator - you can dress up, photograph yourselves, take photos of your LEGO's or of your Stuffies, then add dialogue. You can even photograph your drawings and include them in your narrative. Great storytelling! |
